They fear that their world will fall apart if they stop believing certain things, or admit the truth of other things. That is one of the beliefs with which they got programmed - the idea that if they don't believe the right things, they will go to Hell, or they will lose their ticket to Heaven, or something else really bad will happen to them. One of the things that cults do is implant phobias about leaving the cult, or learning the truth about the cult.
They are afraid of losing their status or membership in the group - they are afraid that they will be shunned and ostracized if they don't believe the same things as the other people around them. And they are just plain afraid of being alone.

They fear that they will have to leave the cult if they stop believing in it, and they will stop believing in it if they learn a bunch of negative things about it. ("Then what will I do with my life?!") So they plug their ears and close their eyes, and play "Hear no evil, see no evil..."
Some people just don't want to see that they were fooled.

"I refuse to believe that I spent twelve years of my life in a cult. It isn't a cult. It can't be a cult. It's a wonderful movement."
As they say in A.A., "Denial isn't just a river in Egypt."

Some people just don't want to give it up.
"If I leave the group, I will be lonely because I won't have any friends. So shut up and quit telling me disturbing things about it."
"I have lots of time invested here. I'm a respected elder. If I quit the organization, I'll be a nobody."

Carl Sagan, in his book The Demon Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark, told the story of how the TV program 60 Minutes in Australia performed a funny candid-camera kind of experiment where they manufactured a phony guru and then foisted him on the public for a few weeks, to see how gullible the public was. The experiment was a great success (if you look at it that way) because nobody, not even the press or other TV news organizations, even bothered to check out the charlatan's false credentials and fake credits. Everybody just swallowed it all, hook, line, and sinker. And the most outrageous part was the fact that, after 60 Minutes and even the phony guru himself explained to the public that it had all been a hoax, just a test of gullibility, some people still said to the phony guru, "We don't care what they say about you. We still believe in you." Some people will do just about anything to avoid admitting that they have been fooled - even continue to be fooled. It seems like, once you get those people committed to the hoax, you've really got them.

Question for Dogpatch (Randy): What will it cost to produce the new 16-page Watchtower & Awake?

when literature used to be sold d2d, i remember how the society never missed an opportunity to trash other religions for "peddling god's word for profit" while boasting about how the watchtower only charges for the cost of the paper and ink.. in the book "witnesses of jehovah", the author mentioned that randall watters used to be involved in print cost analysis and determined that, while we were selling wt & awake mags for 20 cents door-to-door, it was really only costing the society 4 cents per copy to produce.

that's a whopping 400% profit!.

obviously, things have changed... the paper is different, as well as the ink and printing methods in general.

Just last week I past by a KH thats for sale. I remember building this hall back in the late 80's early 90's and the hall was in good shape the last time I was there for a wedding in 03. I cant help but wonder was this hall victim of the KH remodeling scam. I know an old hall I went to before bethel was closed because the congo's could not afford the remodeling scam.

As long as they keep up the assemblies and DC they will keep a healthy cash flow coming in and they can scale back other operations.

Yeah the difference between printing 16 pgs or 32 is a flip of the switch. Especially considering the whole reason to get out of NY was they had these brand new presses coming on line that could do so much of the work?!?

Is The End of the "Preaching Work" Now In Sight?

there may not be any specific plan to end the "preaching work" but that doesn't mean that things can't evolve into such an outcome.

indeed, i now wonder if such a thing is probable!.

first, if (and it's a very big if) various nations develop case law that includes liability for volunteers, this will put the watchtower in a bind.

There is one problem with ending the preaching work...What will they use to support their non-profit tax exempt status?

This Corporation was made legal in its already existing powers for another purpose entirely. Corporations acquire legitimacy by earning a profit.
In the case of a religious corporation the "profit" must not appear as mere monetary gain.
There has to be a public service aspect to generating millions of dollars that will escape taxation! Ordinary coporations must demonstrate to the Board of Directors that cash flow is equitable to investors and a justifiable return on investment has been made. The Watchtower Corporation had to generate a kind of marvellous "machine" you could pour money into and make it disappear in the form of the preaching work.

They have to have some 'public service' to escape taxation.

" i was going to go in ohio, but my partner in crime can't make it.

i also plan to strike up a conversation about the epic fail of a memorial invite that a local congregation put in my door.

I just threw away a W&A left in our lunch room by a dub I work with. She also left a memorial invite (with the whole jesus is now a great king theme?!?) that also went in the trash.

So what do your Jehovah's Witness friends and loved ones think of the generation teaching?

after the little skit at the last assembly where one brother was asking another for understanding about the generation teaching i thought, "wow, these people will believe anything the watchtower tells them.

" the 'more mature brother' practically said verbatim everything the watchtower said as his explanation.

evidently, this is one of the sources of the increased 'murmuring' that the talked warned against.. so, has anyone brought this up to their witness friends and/or family?

I really dont know how they put up with such non-sense.

I was just over a good friend of mines (best man in my wedding) and he STILL goes?!?

He is the only dub I deal with and he knows why I dont go. I pull up as he is getting home from field service...?!? IDK how he can waste his time with the bull and I asked him how? His reply wasn't that insightful and essentially indicated that he never expected much from the org so he did not have the high hopes I had...whatever that means.

Like I said he is the only dub I deal with and has been a good friend. I have resolved not to question or challenge his dub beliefs, since from what I can tell he doesn't believe and is just going thru the motions.
